 MENTAL MUSIC

Mental Music is an exhibition of acrylic paintings by Taylor Morris. The pieces are inspired by musicians who have suffered from some sort of mental illness and have openly shared their issues. Each painting in the exhibition was inspired by the designs of the album covers.

Taylor Morris takes these musicians’ experiences and uses their album covers, reinterpreting them into her own work. Mental illnesses, such as those more commonly suffered like depression and anxiety, as well as less common illnesses like anorexia and bipolar disorder, are represented in this show. Musicians across varying genres and times have expressed themselves through their music. At the center of each painting is a circle symbolic of a CD. Each CD is a challenge on the viewer to reflect.

The inspiration Taylor Morris found when creating her unique show was from artists such as Van Gogh, Wassily Kandinsky, Edvard Munch, Piet Mondrian, and others. The general idea of expressionism is interpreted in each of her works. Her inspirations influenced her in the way of their fluidity of colors, as color can have everything to do with expressing oneself. Other inspirations influencing the abstraction of loose linear structure within the works. The general idea of "Mental Music" is using someone’s emotions, and reinterpreting them through her own vision. We are all inspired and influenced by something, shaping who we are and how we express ourselves.
